ONE of world rally’s greatest drivers Juha Kankkunen returns to the country that delivered him four WRC victories when he visits Canberra for the annual Hall of Fame dinner next Thursday.
Tickets are on sale to hear the famous Finn speak at the dinner and make the presentations to this year’s Hall of Fame recipients on the eve of the National Capital Rally.
The dinner will be a rare chance to hear first-hand about the exploits of one of the sport’s greatest heroes, who won World Drivers Championships in 1987, 1987, 1991 and 1993.
In a fabulous active WRC career between 1983 and 2002, Kankkunen drove for Toyota, Peugeot, Lancia, Ford, Subaru and Hyundai.
While next week is understood to be Kankkunen’s first visit to Canberra, his Australian experience has centred on the Perth-based editions of Rally Australia, which he won in 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1993 – a number of victories unsurpassed by any other driver.
Although he retired from regular WRC competition in 2002 to follow careers in business and politics, Kankkunen returned in 2010 to place an impressive eighth in WRC Rally Finland and in 2011 set a world speed record of more than 330 kmh driving a Bentley Continental GT on ice.
As well as the special guest, there will be plenty of other enjoyable activity on rally’s night of nights.
An auction of rally memorabilia will include a fantastic picture of Juha in Rally Australia by leading photographer Stuart Bowes.
Seats for the dinner are selling fast, but bookings can still be made at http://www.trybooking.com/Booking/BookingEventSummary.aspx?eid=120856
