WRC 6, the official video game of the 2016 FIA World Rally Championship, is released today.
The latest version of the highly successful game is the only one which faithfully reproduces every aspect of the WRC as well as presenting current World Rally Car liveries. Volkswagen Motorsport, Abu Dhabi Total World Rally Team, Hyundai Motorsport and M-Sport World Rally Team are represented in 2016 colours.
While WRC 6 has had its global release today, it will be on sale in Australian stores on Friday 14 October.
Gamers can select from more than 400km of new and reworked roads covering almost 70 of the WRC’s legendary special stages, including those on Rally Australia.
They also include classic locations such as the fan favourite Colin’s Crest from the Vargåsen stage at Rally Sweden, the stunning lunar landscapes of El Condor from YPF Rally Argentina and the mighty roller-coaster jumps of Ouninpohja from Neste Rally Finland.
Players can choose to don the race boots of more than 50 drivers, headlined by the leading World Rally Car pilots, such as triple world champion Sébastien Ogier, Thierry Neuville and Kris Meeke.
A wide selection of competitors from the championship’s WRC 2 support category, including series leader Elfyn Evans and Esapekka Lappi, is available, along with FIA Junior WRC drivers, headed by newly-crowned champion Simone Tempestini.
New for 2016 are 11 of the WRC’s Super Special Stages, held in city streets or stadiums. As in real-life, they include sequences of spectacular corners and frequently feature two cars competing side-by-side.
Publisher Bigben Interactive and development studio Kylotonn Racing Games have made significant improvements to increase the realism for players, including longer stages on narrower and bumpier roads.
WRC 6 was conceived for the latest-generation game consoles and PCs, allowing the makers to enhance graphics, audio and car behaviour.
Another upgrade sure to be popular with gamers is the introduction of a split-screen mode, allowing two players to share the same screen while playing simultaneously.
As in previous versions, players can select from several primary game modes including:
• Career – climb the sport’s ladder from Junior WRC to the headline World Rally Car category
• Quick stage – choose a car, stage, weather and time of day and floor the accelerator!
• Custom championship – players can design their own challenge and choose and rallies and stages they want to tackle
Features allow gamers to set up major components such as suspension, brakes and ride height and experience the tension of nursing their car to the end of a stage with mechanical problems or crash damage.
WRC Promoter managing director Oliver Ciesla believes the game will once again prove a big hit with the sport’s fans.
“WRC 6 captures the adventure and challenges posed by the real-life FIA World Rally Championship,” he said.
“Indeed, it is the only video game that allows players to experience every single aspect of the WRC.
“Classic rallies from across the globe, legendary special stages and unpredictable conditions combine in a high-adventure game where tenths of a second make the difference between winning and losing.”
“Significant improvements mean WRC 6 is even more true-to-life than its predecessors. Gamers can step into their heroes’ shoes to test their skills before enjoying the drama of the WRC itself on our media platforms.”
For a second season WRC 6 will form the base for a global eSports WRC championship, with gamers competing in multi-player tournaments simultaneously with every round of the 2017 WRC.
This year’s eSports WRC Championship will reach its climax when the inaugural world champions are crowned at the final at Dayinsure Wales Rally GB on 27-30 October.
WRC 6 is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC/Steam.
